We wrote to customers recently to advise of the changes introduced by Glasgow City Council (GCC) to their bulk uplift service.
Glasgow City Council (GCC) used to provide a weekly bulk uplift service. We supported this by using our contractor, Caledonian Maintenance, to pull items of bulk waste out from the bin areas and take them to the bulk collection points. GCC would then collect the bulk waste from there and dispose of it appropriately.
Unfortunately, at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, GCC stopped providing this service. As a result, we asked Caledonian Maintenance to suspend their service of pulling the bulk waste out of bin areas.
Since GCC ended their service, there has been a significant build-up of bulk waste items in certain areas. We have been using our own directly-employed staff teams as well as our contractors to deal with this as best we can on an ad hoc basis. GCC have advised that, from 10th December 2020, they will operate a 'by request only' service for bulk uplifts from residents in flats and main door properties. This means they will no longer be picking up items of bulk waste from designated collection points on 'bulk day'.
As a result, Maryhill Housing have developed plans to replace the service previously provided by GCC. The aim of the service we are introducing is to provide a weekly bulk uplift collection service. The new service will start on week commencing Monday 14th December 2020 and will be provided by our in-house Estate Caretaking Team.
At this stage, we can only confirm that customers will receive a weekly collection of bulk waste - we cannot confirm the exact day it will be collected until we have reviewed the level of resource required to deliver the new service. We will write to customers again after Christmas, following the review of the new service, in order to confirm the day that bulk waste will be collected.
In the meantime, if you have items of bulk waste that you are able to dispose of yourself (e.g. if you have your own transport and are able to take items to a local recycling centre) please continue to do so. If you are not able to dispose of items of bulk waste yourself, please leave them in the bin areas and our team will collect them from there each week.
If you are having difficulty taking any bulk items from your home to the bin areas, or if you become aware of an excessive build-up of bulk items in the bin areas in between the weekly collections, please call us on 0141 946 2466 and we will do our best to assist.
We would also like to take this opportunity to highlight the following:-
You should continue to dispose of general household waste in your GCC wheelie bins or Eurobins as normal. Please do not leave general household rubbish next to or around the bins in the bin area.
Please do not leave items of bulk waste on footpaths or pavements. GCC have confirmed that they will be introducing enforcement action in the form of fines to any individuals found to be doing this.
Please ensure that all items of bulk waste are now left in the bin areas and stored away from the general waste bins so that there are no obstructions which will prevent your general waste and recycling bins being emptied.
We appreciate that the position with bulk waste has been particularly challenging since the beginning of the pandemic when GCC stopped providing the uplift service. We are extremely grateful to our customers for their patience and would welcome feedback on the new service when it starts.
