Are you looking to get an insight into working life at Maryhill Housing from those who know it best? Each month we'll be sitting down for a coffee and a chat with a member of staff to find out a bit about them and their role. Martin is one of our housing officers and has been with the Association for two years.
Tell us who you are and a bit about yourself.
Hi, I'm Martin. I'm a Housing Officer at Maryhill Housing, and I've been here for two years. Before that, I worked as a Housing Officer for North Lanarkshire Council for seven years, and prior to that, I was a Clerical Assistant for the Housing department. So, I've been working in housing for years! Before that, I was a retail manager.
What was your first job?
My first job was as a part-time Sales Assistant at Matalan. I went full-time after leaving school and eventually worked my way up to becoming the manager.
What's your favourite part of your role at Maryhill Housing?
The bit I enjoy most has got to be giving someone the keys to their new home, without a shadow of a doubt! I actually once wanted to be an estate agent for that very reason. It's so rewarding when you can see the smile on someone's face, particularly someone who is in need of housing, when they finally get their keys.
What's your favourite book, film and holiday destination?
Until a few years ago, my favourite book was probably The Bad Tempered Ladybird! I don't read that often, but it would probably be Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, as I can remember reading that from front to back and being unable to put it down.
I have no idea what my favourite movie is, but my go-to TV show when I want to relax is probably Family Guy. The holiday destination would need to be Rome. It's a beautiful place with so much history – the Coliseum, for example. There are loads of places I'd like to go. I like travelling by train, so I'd like to travel through Europe to a beer festival in Munich!
