Are you looking for insight into working life at Maryhill Housing from those who know it best? Each month, we'll be sitting down for a coffee and a chat with a member of staff to find out a bit about them and their role. Adam joined the Association two years ago as a Trainee Property Officer and is now a Property Investment Manager, overseeing a wide range of programmes to make improvements to our homes.
Tell us who you are and a bit about yourself
Hello, I'm Adam. I'm the Property Investment Manager at Maryhill Housing. I have been with the Association for two years, and before that, I worked in supply chain management for IKEA for almost ten years. I started off in logistics in Sydney, Australia, where I was living at the time, before returning to Glasgow, where I worked in supply chain management at the Braehead office.
I joined Maryhill Housing as a Trainee Property Officer after seeing an online post advertising a graduate apprenticeship in quantity surveying, with the course delivered by Edinburgh Napier University. I knew that I wanted to become a quantity surveyor, but I hadn't realised that I wanted to pursue a career in housing before I started working for the Association; being directly involved with our tenants and making improvements to their homes helped me to realise this. I also like that I am working for a charity. I've only been here a short time, but I have fallen in love with housing! Plus, I am able to put the theory I am learning in the classroom into practice through my role.
What was your first job?
My first job was working as a sandwich maker at a Subway in Australia while I was still at school. To this day, if I'm ever making a baguette or a panini, I still cut the bread in the exact same way as they do in-store!
What's your favourite part of your role at Maryhill Housing?
It would have to be meeting a range of different people from different backgrounds – tenants, staff, contractors – I meet so many people in my role. It's also the variety of the projects I manage because we have such a great investment programme. We've got heating programmes, stonework refurbishment, entrance door replacements and more all happening right now. There's so much going on, and there are a great variety of projects to be involved in. Our energy efficiency projects, such as wall insulation and our Air Source Heat Pump retrofit programme, are my favourite – they are really important because they provide our tenants with homes that are warm, sustainable and affordable.
What's your favourite book, film and holiday destination?
My favourite book is probably The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. It's a book about how to accept who you are, how people perceive you, not worrying too much about what others think and how to live a happy and peaceful life.
The film would probably have to be The Family Stone – it's a Christmas film that brings back many good memories. Plus, I love Christmas!
For the holiday destination, it would have to be Thailand.
